Mardan, District headquarter, the biggest town of Yousafzais and once the centre of Gandhara Civilisation, includes Takht-iBhai, Sahri Bahlol, Jamal Garhi, Shahbaz Garhi, Sikri, Chanaka Dheri and Palo Dheri as major Buddhist sites of Gandhara. A museum in Mardan has been recently opened. From Mardan, one can go to Shahbaz Garhi on Swabi road, where the Ashoka Rock Edicts are located. Many Buddhist legends are associated with this place, which is located at a distance of 15 km from Mardan. From here, the road goes further up to Asota Megaliths (’Stonehenge of Pakistan’) nearShiwa Adda on the Swabi Mardan road, and then to Swabi. At Swabi, the road bifurcates, one leading to Hund, the last capital of Gandhara under the Shahi rulers from the 7th-10th century AD. Mardan's historical significance is deeply ingrained, with ancient sites like the Takht-i-Bahi Buddhist monastery standing as testaments to its past. As the epicenter of Gandhara civilization, the district resonates with echoes of a rich history, while its Pashtun culture infuses warmth, hospitality, and a strong sense of community. Amidst this cultural legacy, Mardan has embraced progress, emerging as an economic hub driven by agriculture, commerce, and industries. The district's educational institutions contribute to intellectual growth, empowering future generations and paving the way for innovation and modernization.
